Beat Talk

I find myself unable to relate to the current crop of producers in Perth and around the world... I fail to understand how you can have Pete Rock or Diamond D as one of your "influences", yet you make utter trash with bad sounding, pirated midi synths, and overly clean sounding drums kits. If you studied how these guys made their music, it's based on creative sampling. If you're intent on creating your own melodies... why not choose the sounds that are natural sounding... not these crappy sounding synthesizers.

I fear hip hop, like real hip hop, is gonna disappear as these terrible producers are becoming popular. The art of true beat making is becoming lost.

I entered a "beat battle" in Perth a few years back... and lost my round to one of these type of producers. No changes in the beat... nothing sampled... bad synths and was completely dumbfounded. I dont take these competitions too seriously, but i was really suprised by how normal it was for all the beatmakers to get away with such trash and it to be totally acceptable. I put mad effort into chopping this loop and totally rearranging it into something dope... how could the judges not hear that? I made it obvious by playing the original loop then playing my arrangement... anyway... it's not the losing im upset about... it's the way i see things going, that upsets me...

I'm unshaken in my view of how to make hip hop... my hip hop... i know what these cats before me have done... so i know how to do my thing now... real hip hop, in my view, was pioneered by your marley marls, your pete rocks, dj premier, large professor, diamond d, buckwild to name but a few.. their path is the path i choose to follow... not this other bullshit i keep hearing all around me...

you gotta know your records, or have some sort of understanding... you gotta know soul, funk and jazz... the genres hip hop came from... otherwise you're just making bullshit... for further explanation of this, check my other blog The Art Of Making Beats...

  1. do you want a tissue? stop being such an elitist fuck, you basically bring nothing original at all to music and then whinge when someone has some sense to be a bit more innovative. Just because you don't like "synths" doesn't make them shitty sounding or wack. You're just a bitter fuck head that can't stand the fact that not everyone makes 90's NY boom bap music, you should try something else anyway cause you're shit sounds like a watered down rip off of pete rock. 1. im all for innovation, but thats a different genre... its not hip hop... there are great artists like ta-ku and dam funk who understand the roots of hip hop production and decided to create something else.. without sounding tacky or wack... as for my music... i just do what sounds good to me... and i'm largely happy with it... as are a lot of other people... theres no need for the attack bro... sorry if you feel offended... but maybe that's saying something about you...

  3. Haha. I guess someone is a little upset. Don't worry, mate. There is plenty of auto-tune, synth pop crap out there for you. No need to hang here with the real heads.

  4. This is basically exactly how i feel, although in the rare occasion a synth track can sound dope but i miss that grimey sound, muffled drums, that crackle from the record on samples etc, today it sounds to polished and pretty on some dance music disco shit. Hip hop is street music, its gotta have that sound of the street, like a sound you would imagine walking down a dark alley, these days the majority of tracks are for clubs and dancing for girls which is fine but its just sad that its the majority these days because most people who listen to hip hop these days know nothing of the street life and culture. We had the same sort of crap back in our day too with Mc Hammer etc, but not many real heads listened to it because it came off as fake and dancey/poppy, but today its the opposite, everyones listening to the dancey/poppy shit like thats that real shit. Its amazing how well marketing works though, thats what has all these listeners on the wrong path imo, they just been brainwashed into thinking that crap you hear today is real hip hop.
